The incidence of suicide among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is more than double the rate of other Australians.
In the five years from 2012 to 2016, the proportion of suicide deaths for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (5.5%) was over three times greater than for non-Indigenous Australians (1.7%).

Healthcare Management Advisors (HMA) was honoured to have been initially appointed by the Minister to auspice the service, until the new Aboriginal led organisation, Thirrili Ltd, was established. HMA continues to assist Thirrili Ltd by providing administrative and project support to the NICRS.
The NICRS was launched by the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, the Hon. Nigel Scullion, MP, on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Monday, 23 January 2017.
