Nuclear Medicine Industry Analysis – Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources

Nuclear medicine is widely used in Australia for diagnosis and treatment of disease. The preparation and delivery of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine involves complex manufacturing processes, and the short half-life of products affects all aspects of the supply chain including production, supply, pricing and service delivery. The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER) engaged Healthcare Management Advisors (HMA) to undertake a scoping project to examine the supply and demand of nuclear medicine in Australia. The project was commissioned to support the effective and affordable delivery of nuclear medicine services for Australians and ensure that the Australian nuclear medicine sector is viable. Key tasks included:

  • Design of a market analysis framework
  • Desktop review of the literature and existing data including previous reports and costing studies
  • Targeted stakeholder consultation to understand system complexities and identify additional data sources
  • Design of a method to investigate the price elasticity of demand of the nuclear medicine supply chain, and
  • Preparation of an Implementation Plan for the next phase of the analysis.

The project commenced in June 2021 and was completed in July 2021.
